Walk the Hill to Find Your Christmas Tree

By Aimee Theriault, HillontheAvenue

To capture the spirit of the holidays you don’t have to trek to a farm in rural PA to chop down a Christmas tree – in fact, you don’t even have to leave Chestnut Hill. Shop local this season, leave your axe at home, and take a walk down Germantown Avenue to find a fresh cut PA grown tree to trim with your family. Right on the Avenue are 3 merry tree shops that are ready to help tie a Douglas fir to your car roof, deliver to your home, and one business is even ready to help put the tree in the stand for you. Happy tree hunting!

Laurel Hill Gardens

The woodsy smell and cozy warmth of the on-going bonfire at Laurel Hill Gardens will surely lure you into their tree shop, but the large tree assortment and the let-us-do-it-for-you mantra of the staff will have you leaving with a Fraser fir, Douglas fir, or Concolor tree. Owner Joseph Ascenzi will be selling trees right up until Christmas Eve, and offers free delivery to Chestnut Hill residents. For $50, Laurel Hill Gardens is the only stop on the Avenue that will carry the tree into your home and will secure the tree into your tree stand – a great service option for bulky trees over 10 ft. You’ll be able find a Christmas tree between $60 and $95 at Laurel Hill Gardens.

When to buy your tree:

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday: 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.
Wednesday & Friday: 10 a.m. - 9 p.m.
Saturday: 9 a.m. - 8 p.m.
Sunday: 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Top of The Hill

Top of the Hill prides itself for keeping the absolute freshest stock of locally grown Fraser firs, Douglas firs, Blue Spruce trees, Concolor firs, and fragrant Canaan trees. Andrew Peszka, manager of Top of The Hill, receives frequent deliveries of trees from a local Christmas tree farm in Lehighton PA, where trees are cut only when they are ordered. Although delivery is not complimentary at Top of The Hill (there is a $5 charge), this is the only tree shop that offers a tree recycling pickup service. “We have the trees we pickup turned into useful and nutrient rich pine mulch,” says Peszka, who encourages Chestnut Hill residents to give them a call after the holidays. The friendly staff here will have your tree bailed and tied to the roof of your car for between $20 and $80.

When to buy your tree:

Monday - Friday: 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.
Saturday: 8 a.m. - 7 p.m.
Sunday: 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Bee’s Knees Christmas Trees

Luke Williams and Bee’s Knees Christmas Trees may not own their own shop on Germantown Avenue, but they’ve enjoyed bringing their locally grown Douglas fir Christmas trees to the Chestnut Hill West Train Station for over 10 years. Luke and his team deliver their $40 to $60 trees to all of Chestnut Hill free of charge and can arrange either same-day delivery or a scheduled delivery.

When to buy your tree:

Wednesdays (Stag & Doe Nights): 5 p.m. - 9 p.m.
Saturdays & Sundays: 9 a.m. - 8 p.m.

Greener than your Christmas Tree

All 3 tree shopkeepers encouraged Chestnut Hill Residents to recycle their trees after the holiday season. If you don’t schedule a tree pickup from the team at Top of The Hill, please check out the other environmentally friendly options in the community such as the City of Philadelphia Christmas Tree Drop-off Event.
