Presbyterian Church Opens New Space

By Pam Learned, HillontheAvenue

There’s no need to choose where to be on Sundays during football season. You can do it all at the Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill—worship upstairs, tailgate in the parking lot, then gather for the game downstairs.

That’s one idea Minister and Head of Staff Cindy Jarvis envisions as part of the congregation’s mission. Her point is, whimsical or spiritual, educational or social, the space is meant to be a gathering place for the entire community.

The grand new gathering space is a remodel of most of the church’s lower level. During the day, the 3,000 square foot space is known as Center on the Hill, a senior center. It was renovated by the church and is jointly programmed by the Chestnut Hill Center for Enrichment, The Senior Circle of Chestnut Hill Hospital, Mt. Airy Learning Tree, Chestnut Hill College, and Resources for Older Adult Living of the Neighborhood Interfaith Movement. Because of the space’s versatility, it can be used for many other purposes. In total the space is divided into 5 beautiful classrooms, one of which is set toward a large, wall-mounted flat-screen TV—perfect for lectures and ... football fans. The church also hosts the Rotary, Weight Watchers, the Outdoor Gardeners, and musical groups (including external groups like Piffaro and Tempesta de Mare, and in-house groups like the Pennsylvania Girlchoir and The Crossing).

Reaching out is integral to the church’s mission. A program titled "Communities for the Common Good" is intended to inspire and build church members’ skills and training in advocacy, empowerment, and continuing education with the purpose of helping individuals learn how to make a difference in the world. To inspire each member to choose their own cause, planned classes include:

Sunday, November 8. "In Search of the Common Good for the Homeless," presented by Rachael Falkove and a guest family, Northwest Philadelphia Interfaith Hospitality Network.

Sunday, November 15. “The Triunity of the Common Good," presented by Robert Jenson, retired Senior Research Scholar, Center of Theological Inquiry, Princeton, NJ.

Sunday, November 22. "In Search of the Common Good for the for the Hungry," presented by Eileen Jones, director of the Germantown Avenue Crisis Ministry, and representatives from Bethesda Project and Norristown Good Cupboard.
