A 3rd Weavers Way Co-op location is coming to Chestnut Hill in early summer 2010, with a soft opening set for mid-May. This community-owned market’s goals extend far beyond the 30 new job opportunities they plan to fill at a job fair on Monday, March 15.

“More than anything, we hope our new store location will positively impact the big picture in Chestnut Hill with increased foot traffic on Germantown Ave., attraction of new shoppers, and the birth of new businesses surrounding our CH Weavers Way,” says Weavers Way Communications Director Jonathan McGoran.

Repeating a Successful Model

McGoran and the Weavers Way management team believe their success in helping other businesses succeed in Mt. Airy will be repeated in Chestnut Hill.

“So many other storefronts like the High Point Café and Philly Electric Wheels opened just to be close to our Mt. Airy Weavers Way market – we really believe our Chestnut Hill location will be the new anchor store for hillers on Germantown Ave.,” says McGoran.

Weavers Way also hopes the Chestnut Hill location will draw some customers from their over-crowded Mt. Airy location. “The Chestnut Hill store will be bigger, and we believe many of our Mt. Airy shoppers will choose to make our new location their go-to market,” says McGoran.

Chestnut Hill Weavers Way is Hiring

For its June 2010 Chestnut Hill expected grand opening date, Weavers Way Co-op is on a quest to fill 30 new full-time and part-time positions in the deli, prepared foods, grocery, produce, and cashier departments as soon as possible. A job fair will take place at 8400 Germantown Ave. on Monday, March 15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Human resources manager Jon Roesser says ideal candidates will be able to work some early evenings and at least one weekend day. Weavers Way offers full-time employees a generous benefits package, including medical and dental insurance, retirement plan, paid vacation and sick time, and an employee discount.

“One big reason we’re so excited about opening in Chestnut Hill is that we will be bringing in so many new jobs to Northwest Philadelphia in a time where jobs are sorely needed,” says Weavers Way president Nancy Weinman.

New Location, Same Membership Policy

Founded in 1973 by a group of neighbors in Mt. Airy, Weavers Way Co-op now has more than 3,200 members and 60 employees. This community-owned market reaches revenues approaching $8 million at its 2 current locations in Mt. Airy and Ogontz. Membership in the Co-op is open to everyone, and all are encouraged to join.

Cooperator labor is an integral part of the philosophy of the Co-op. Working puts the members in touch with each other and serves to strengthen community ties. Weavers Way does not require that members sign up for work-shifts, however it is highly encouraged. Members who chose to work in addition to paying their $30 annual investment, receive a 5% household discount on groceries. The Weavers Way member work commitment requires that each adult per household works 6 hours per year.

Furthermore, Weavers Way Co-op stores are open to the public – you don’t have to be a member or working member to enjoy local milk, bread, cheese, and other products that are sourced from Weavers Way owned farms in Northwest Philadelphia. Learn more about membership opportunities and Co-op involvement at the Weavers Way website.
